Maesteg Cottage

Gelliwen

Maesteg, a traditional Welsh cottage built in 1835, enjoying a sunny westerly aspect. This cottage is full of charm and character amidst the countryside, enjoying a sheltered position in the beautiful Cynin river valley.

Property Highlights

  • Beautiful rural setting convenient to explore West Wales
  • Accepts two well behaved dogs
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Traditional Cottage
  • On-site parking for one vehicle
  • Pretty garden with far reaching rural views

From the moment you park your car and approach this property, you will feel like you have arrived somewhere very special. Maesteg, is an idyllic place to escape to a beautiful rural location yet in just a short drive you will reach either the Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire coastline, or travel in the other direction to explore Ceredigion and the Preseli Hills. It's the perfect spot to relax, unwind and explore all that West Wales has to offer.

Wander through the pretty cottage door and enter the double reception with its centrepiece, a beautiful stone fireplace and log burner. There are several comfortable sofas and a Smart TV, along with some board games, perfect for cosying up on an evening.

Enter through the original low level door into a modern and bright extended kitchen with dual aspect views from the dining area to the pretty garden and the far reaching hills to the other direction. The kitchen is well equipped with all mod cons including dishwasher and microwave.

The downstairs bathroom with a separate toilet, has a bath with shower over.

Leave the kitchen and wander through the pretty split level garden with a small pond. The gardens are a terraced delight with many shrubs and plants and wonderful views of the valley from the top of the garden, the previous owner was a gold winner at the Chelsea flower show 2011 with a garden titled ' postcard from South Wales'. Some areas of the garden have steep steps leading to the very top level.

Back inside the property and open the door to the quaint original staircase leading to the two double bedrooms on the first floor with beamed vaulted ceilings.

Other things to note

- There is a £25 dog fee payable during the check in process per pet

St Clears is the nearest town, with a good choice of coffee shops, a handful of pubs and restaurants. It is perfectly located to explore Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire.

Laugharne is a 10 minute drive, and is perhaps best known for its associations with Wales' most famous poet, Dylan Thomas. Laugharne is a small town sitting on the estuary of the Taf River and offers stunning estuary walks, including the famous Dylan Thomas Birthday Walk. The Boathouse, where Dylan and Caitlin lived with their children, is now a heritage centre. Overlooking the estuary are the dramatic ruins of a Norman Castle, a popular visitor attraction. Laugharne has a good choice of cafes and restaurants. There are also plenty of woodland walks and the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path starts nearby.

There are also a good choice of outdoor activities available in the area, ranging from horse riding, coasteering, to a variety of water sports, abseiling, orienteering, caving and gorge walking.

There are many beautiful rugged beaches in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, along with the more popular coastal resorts of Pendine, Saundersfoot and Tenby.

There is an abundance of interesting attractions locally, including Castles, historic houses and National Botanical Gardens to name a few.

If you are a "foodie" then there is a fantastic choice of restaurants within a 20 - 30 minute's drive ranging from Coast in Coppet Hall, Jabajak Vineyard which is 20 minutes drive, or Y Polyn, just 5 minutes from Carmarthen.

We had a great stay at the cottage. It was even more lovely than the photo's. There was lots of space and it worked well for two couples. The living room was so cosy especially with the fire going, great garden for doggie too. Very handy to have a Co-op a short drive down the road and a bonus that it's open till 10pm. If you're planning on eating out for dinner at any local pubs it's probably best to book in advance especially if you're taking doggie. That said we had a great meal at the Savoy Country Inn which is a 15 minute drive away. I'd definitely stay at Maesteg Cottage again :0)

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Maesteg Cottage, it was very well equipped and we found everything that we needed plus a lovely welcome pack including Welsh cakes, wine and coffee. The cottage has a few quirky features including an unusual upstairs toilet!! It is a very comfortable and homely property, particularly the beds, we all slept very well. There is also a beautiful enclosed garden on different layers with a secluded spot at the top where you can sit and enjoy the view in the evening sun. The location is good for visiting a variety of places and we enjoyed Laugharne, Tenby, Cardigan, Gwbert and Tresaith Beach and waterfall, all within around 35 minutes travel by car from the cottage. We would stay again.

Lovely peaceful place, just what we wanted to rest and recuperate. Beautiful walks we enjoyed with our dog. Easy to get to the Welsh coast for nice days out. Sitting near the fireplace with a warm fire was a treat. Cute cottage with character, with lovely private outdoor space.

The cottage is very cosy. Living room is cosy with a large fireplace but plenty of space. The sofas are a bit tired but not a problem.
We travelled during a 30°+ heat wave and the living room was very cool due to the stone walls which made it a very welcome place to be!
The garden is lovely and full of secret paths for the kids but be warned, there is a pond exposed, so no good for toddlers.
The area is fantastic with Pembrokeshire coast and loads of things for the kids.
Only gripe is that there is no parking by the cottage other than a layby. There is a car park 150 yards up the road however which allows you to see some incredible scenery of the area, so absolutely this is not a negative overall.
Worth mentioning that there is no TV signal or mobile coverage although there was broadband and WiFi available.

A beautiful location - very rural and out of the hustle and bustle of city life. There are no shops / pubs or restaurants near the property so go prepared. The garden is a lovely place to relax and the cottage is a special experience- cosy and adequate. Parking is a problem though, the neighbours occupy the parking space which is meant for this property so we had to squeeze into the left over spot which left our car exposed and sticking out into the road, and I had to park so close to the hedgerow that I had to exit the vehicle from the passage door. This is a real downer for this property as otherwise it was a lovely stay.

Absolutely beautiful cottage with everything you could need. We were the first guests to stay there and we absolutely loved it. We loved the garden and the horses in the field behind. The bed in the back room is the most comfortable bed we have ever slept on. We are already looking to book our next two breaks. The welcome pack was a really nice touch as well. Chocolate wine and even treats for the dog it was so kind. Thank you for making our break perfect.
